The Pilgrims Wants: A Poem

The Pilgrim's Wants
(author unknown)

I want a sweet sense of Thy pardoning love,
That my manifold sins are forgiven;
That Christ as my Advocate, pleadeth above,
That my name is recorded in heaven.

I want every moment to feel
That thy Spirit resides in my heart--
That his power is present to cleanse and to heal,
And newness of life to impart.

I want--oh! I want to attain
Some likeness, my Saviour, to thee!
That longed for resemblance once more to regain,
Thy comeliness put upon me.

I want to be marked for thine own--
Thy seal on my forehead to wear;
To receive that new name on the mystic white stone
Which none but thyself can declare.

I want so in thee to abide
As to bring forth some fruit to thy praise;
The branch which thou prunest, though feeble and dried,
May languish, but never decays.

I want thine own hand to unbind
Each tie to terrestrial things,
Too tenderly cherished, too closely entwined,
Where my heart so tenaciously clings.

I want, by my aspects serene,
My actions and words, to declare
That my treasure is placed in a country unseen,
That my heart's best affections are there.

I want as a trav'ller to haste
Straight onward, nor pause on my way;
Nor forethought in anxious contrivance to waste
On the tent only pitched for a day.

I want--and this sums up my prayer--
To glorify thee till I die;
Then calmly, to yield up my soul to thy care,
And breath out in faith my last sigh.

When I first read this poem in the first Elsie Dinsmore book I knew it was one of my favorite's. And it still is! These beautiful words tell of the wants every pilgrim should have. I hope you are inspired on your pilgrimage! :)

  1. Hannah, thanks for sharing that poem! It did inspire, encourage, and remind me. I especially like how it described this life here as 'the tent only pitched for a day;' that's something I need to remember more often than I do now. xx

    2. I've actually only read the Elise ones (the newer versions) - but I'll probably read the others too, if I can get my hands on them *nods*. They sound good!

  7. Oh, this is such a beautiful poem!! I didn't realize that that was in the Elise books...which book was it?
    Also, I want to reply on the comment you replied with on your last post, so I figured I would do it here. XD I know, I'm weird like that.
    Anyway, you are SO sweet!! Thank you so much!! ♥ ♥
    Yeah, I've heard you talk about Compassion Children before, but I just wanted some more details on them. =) And that's what I got, so thanks ever so much! Only thirty-eight dollars? Well,that's pretty awesome! I'm going to start praying and seeing if that is something God wants me to look into!
    Between Hillary and Trump? Gee...that's one of the hardest questions. I mean, there are positives and negatives to both sides! But, according to what I have heard about both of them, I would have to say Hillary. What about you?
    Thanks so much for posting!!

    1. Ariel...do you mind if I hop into this conversation? =)

      I just wrote a long, elegant comment here and accidentally deleted it. Let me try again. =P

      Compassion International!!!!!!!! I just had to say that. =) Our family has used Compassion for a long time. We have a tradition where when we turn 7 years old, we get to select a child and write to him/her until they move out of the system. I now have dear friends in Ecuador and Mexico. ♥ I can't say how much Compassion has blessed me! I have written to my first child for around 8 years...she's definitely one of my best friends. I have been able to share the Gospel with her, pray for her, and build a strong relationship with her. It has been AMAZING! I love her so, so dearly. (Mom says that I write more than anyone else in the Compassion system...which might be true) ;) I really hope that it is God's will for you to use Compassion...it strengthens your faith as you trust Him for the monthly payments and helps you to meet a lovely girl who will become a fast friend. =) I'm praying for you as you make the decision! I know it's hard...but trust in His perfect will. ♥

      Anyway...there's my barging-in comment. =) Now let me make sure that THIS comment sends correctly. ;)

    2. Yes, it really is! And it's actually not in the updated Elsie series, but it's in the first original Elsie book. I love the newer ones better because I think they're easier to read and more interesting, but I did love that poem in the original! <3

      Oh, and no problem! I understand! :)

      And yes, it is such a wonderful program!! And yep, only 38 dollars per month which for a non-working person like me seems a lot, but I'm sure if you were working it would be fine. =) Ooh, that's awesome you're going to start praying about it! I'm sure he'll guide you to what the right thing is!

      Hmmm...you have some interesting thoughts on that! I'm not much into the debates or anything and so I only know what my parents/brothers are thinking, but I would say Trump is definitely better from what I know. The reasoning behind that is because if Hillary became president she would be able to put a ton of people on the (what is it called...?oh!) Supreme Court that think like her and since there's a lot of old people on that Court she would continually be getting more power to put people on it that thought like her and so they could do almost anything they wanted like rule out homeschooling or stuff like that I'm pretty sure. And Trump is at least better in the sense that he's a bit more on our side...it's so confusing and I'm quite sure that sounded like a very immature way to describe what I think. ;D

      And no problem Hosanna!! That is wonderful that you love Compassion so much! We love it too! =)

      Anyway, thank you for your sweet comment Ariel and Hosanna you too for sharing your thoughts!!

    3. @Hosanna: Thanks SOOO much for your prayers. It really means a lot to me. ♥
      @Hannah: Ah, I see. I've only read the updated Elise series, so I wouldn't have come upon that!
      Actually, I don't work; I'm a freshman in high-school! =) *whispers* But I do want a job... ;) I get my money from doing chores around the house, getting good grades in school, helping Mom with stuff around the house, things like that.
      Oh yeah, I can see why you would want Trump then. That would be awful if we had to stop being home-schooled, wouldn't it? I think I take it for granted far to often. =\ Woah, woah, woah...that elections are only next month. That is REALLY close. Time to step up the prayer! =)
      You're welcome! Thank YOU for your sweet comment! And Hosanna, thanks for jumping in the conversation as well! You both are such awesome girls--I'm blessed to know you both! =)

    4. Ooh, that's awesome that you get money for chores and school! :)

      And yes, we definitely take homeschooling for granted! I would absolutely hate if we had to stop it. Oh! And I just heard that Trump has a Christian VP so that's good as well I guess. *shrugs*

      You are the sweetest, Ariel!! Thank you for commenting! ♥ ♥ ♥

    1. Yes, it is Rebekah! =) And yeah, it's from the first original book. Have you read those??

    2. Okay, I was guessing that it was from the original books since you said the Elsie Dinsmore book. ;) No, I haven’t actually read the originals just the A Life of Faith. Did you like the originals? Have you read all of them?

      Delete
    3. Yeah. =) And I've only read the first one. It was actually the first "Life of Faith" book I ever read and so I enjoyed it, but once I read the newer Elsie's I liked them much better than at least what I've read of the originals. More interesting and fun to read! But if you ever read the originals I'd love to know what you think of them! =)
